Tangs/Surgeons
- Should be kept in a tank of at least 100 gallons. These fish range in size but they are a good size fish, so they will need plenty of room to swim. If you are planning on more than one tang or surgeon fish then the tank should be larger.
- These are semi-aggressive and territorial fish.
- Will eat both seaweed/plants and meaty foods.
- Are reef friendly
Water conditions should be:
- Temperature: between 72 and 78 F
- dKH: 8-12
- pH: 8.1-8.4
- sg: 1.020-1.025
These fish are easily recognized by their oval shaped body with brilliant bold colors. There are many variations of the tang and surgeon fish ranging from bold color patterns to unique stripes on the “convict” tang, and that is it’s real name.
Tang compatibility
Tangs will get along with most species of saltwater fish.
Tangs will be aggressive towards other tangs in the same tank, especially fish with similar color or markings.
Caution should be used when placing tangs/surgeons with batfish, foxface/rabbits, and sharks/rays.
Extreme Caution: Tangs should not be placed in a tank with seahorse/pipefish.
