Filefish

  • Should be kept in a tank of at least 30 gallons with some types needing to be kept in larger 70 gallon tanks. These fish range in size but certain styles can reach over 1foot.
  • These are peaceful fish.
  • Will eat both seaweed/plants and meaty foods.
  • Can be placed in reef tanks with caution but is not recommended.

Water conditions should be:      Temperature: between 72 and 78 F

                                                dKH: 8-12

                                                pH: 8.1-8.4

                                                sg: 1.020-1.025

These are not generally an easy fish to recognize due to the many variations in their colors and body styles. There are several variations of the Filefish ranging from bold red and gold colors to unique stripes on several species and clear fins.

 Filefish compatibility-

Filefish will get along with most species of saltwater fish.

Filefish may be aggressive towards other Filefish in the same tank, especially fish with similar color or markings.

Caution should be used when placing Filefish with Large Angelfish, Dartfish, Dragonets, Lions/Scorpions, Pseudochromis, Wrasse and live coral.

Extreme Cution:  Filefish should not be placed in a tank with Eels, Groupers, Seahorse/pipefish, sharks/rays, Triggerfish and Invertebrates.
